Where Things Work Right

** New ideas added 11/01/04 starting at number 4.

       4. Bathroom Doors Open Out, www.whynot.net, trevman31, 4/27/04

All public bathroom doors should exit outwards.  I should exit by pushing on the door. I do not want to exit but
pulling on a handle or knob which is covered with germs from the hundreds of people who left before who didn't
wash their hands. (BTB, simply running some water on your hand(s) for two seconds does not do anything.  Use
               soap. Warm water. Lather. Rinse)

I am aware that some doors cannot open into places with heavy traffic, but more thought should be given to this idea
              during the design.

     5. Jury Duty - Let Us Choose When, www.forbes.com, Seth5447, date unknown

I once tried to volunteer for jury duty when I had the time to do so.  I was stunned to learn "you can't do that."
Why?  Wouldn't letting people schedule dates to serve benefit everyone and encourage more people to serve?
Wouldn't this put less of a burden on pulling people from jobs at times that might critical for their employer or
               agency?

     6. Panic Pin, www.halfbakery.com, johng, 7/20/00

In addition to the regular PIN number (*), each bank card would have a second PIN number that would indicate the
user was in some sort of distress (such as being forced to withdraw money at gunpoint).  Use of this alternate PIN
would summon the police and perhaps put the ATM's camera in a higher resolution and/or frame rate mode.  The
panic PIN would otherwise function just like the regular PIN in that money could be gotten from the machine, so
that the hostile party would not be able to tell that authorities had been called. Perhaps the ATM could distribute
               marked bills as well.

I think that the general knowledge that any coerced PIN or transaction could actually be used to summon the police
would dramatically lower the incindence of crimes against ATM users.

     7. Keyhole Coated with Luminous Material, www.creativitypool.com, aarthidhar, 4/30/04

There are several times when you fumble to fit the key into the hole.  If the edge of the keyhole in the lock or on
the door is coated with luminous material it can be easily found in the dark.  No need for torch or any external light
               source.

     8. Elevator DeSelect, www.whynot.net, Elon, 12/02/03

This is simple...I think.  A button in an elevator to "unselect" a floor.

     9. Backward Period Amnesty Period, www.halfbakery.com, st3f, 11/02/04

Many office systems force their users to change their passwords on a regular basis.  If I forget my password, it'll
always be the day after I changed it. The new one just hasn't fixed itself in my brain yet.

In cases when the password has been changed routinely, rather than to counter any specific security threat, the old
password could remain active for a week as a background password.

Should a user enter a password wrongly (three times in a row) within the first week of a scheduled password
change, they would be taken to a screen where they can change the new password to something more memorable,
using the old password as authentication.

    10. Chewing Gum Aspirin, www.creativitypool.com, bob12, 5/09/04

Some times you need to take an aspirin to stop a headache but you don't have any water or juice to do so.  A
chewing gum aspirin would be a handy solution. This method could be generalized to other medicine especially for
              children.
